The George A. Dean
Memorial Scholarship Fund

George Dean's favorite saying was Susan B. Anthony's "Failure is impossible."

George, "Alden" to his oldest friends, was a man of great good humor whose life underwent a striking metamorphosis.  He was a political conservative as a young man at Princeton, served in Korea in the Army, and built a career as an advertising executive in New York.  At some point during the 1980s, however, George began to understand that the United States could not reach its full potential without the presence of women throughout the political and governmental structures of the nation.

He created a new campaign, 50/50 by 2020, to increase women's participation in elected national offices.  He wrote hundreds of editorials and letters, and gave hundreds of speeches to anyone who would listen - and many who would not - promoting equal representation of women as necessary for the success of the country.  Most important, George supported women candidates.

The Women's Campaign School at Yale became one of George Dean's projects.  He served on our Board of Directors and was our President for a time.  After the 2000 election, George wrote, "If we ever want to see gender parity in our government, however, we will have to encourage, train and support more women to campaign for public office at all levels - from local elections to the White House."

George Dean died on January 10, 2003.

We were fortunate to have known him, and we remember his spirit through the George A. Dean Memorial Scholarship Fund.  If you would like to give a gift in honor of George and his work with 50/50 by 2020, please visit our online donation link above, or send your tax-deductible contribution to:
